The organization's original name was "Ordine Figli D'Italia". Figlio means son; Figlia means daughter and Figli means children. Therefore the translation - Order Sons of Italy in America was intended to represent the children of Italy in America. Thus, all lodges are open to all Italian men and women, whether by birth, descent, adoption or marriage. Lodges also welcome social members of all nationalities.
